How to reach us

The PSSJD's Medical Assistive Devices Innovation Group (IDAM) is comprised of researchers from diverse healthcare areas who, through translational research, seek to bring clinical needs to the research world in order to find solutions and responses that can improve daily clinical practice. The group is divided into various areas of expertise with the goal of creating both innovative medical devices and adapting existing ones based on the results obtained in their research.

Research lines

  1. Innovation in Infectious Malalties, IP: Vicens Diaz de Brito (PhD).
  2. Innovation Unit, IP: Judit López (PhD).
  3. Innovation in devices to improve patient safety. PI: Ramon MIR (PhD).
  4. Innovation in sexual and reproductive health. PI: Eva Martinez (PhD).
  5. Innovation in thromboembolic malaria. IP: Pablo Marchena (MD).

Our team is currently recognized and funded as an SGR research group in the emerging category (file number and grant acceptance: 2021 SGR 01471).

Scientific objectives

  • Innovation in Infectious Diseases: The research areas are mainly divided into: e-medicine medical devices that support nosocomial infection surveillance and Antimicrobial Use Optimization Program (PROA) teams, prosthetic infections, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), sexually transmitted infections and HIV, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), and COVID-19. The group has extensive experience in these areas, having participated in various research studies and clinical trials (both its own and collaborative) that have generated a wealth of scientific output.
  • Innovation Unit: Additionally, each of the projects in which the Innovation Unit group participates includes the corresponding researchers, project coordinators, study leaders (if applicable), and other collaborators to carry out the project. The Innovation Unit group's current strategic objectives, which it will achieve in the coming years, are:
    • Promote a culture of innovation.
    • Provide the support professionals need.
    • Promote innovation in research groups, professionals, and the institution itself.
    • Improve processes and care delivery.
  • Innovation in devices for improving patient safety: The group's research focuses primarily on aspects related to patient safety and reducing risks arising from healthcare. The clinical approach to psychomotor agitation, management to improve the pediatric patient experience during invasive procedures, and the evolution and measurement of Patient Safety Culture in healthcare organizations have been some of the highlighted projects. Innovation as a response to problems related to patient safety is also relevant in the group's current and future research. The impact of healthcare provided to people who interact with the healthcare system is an area of special interest, as it offers an opportunity to identify the need to incorporate innovative solutions to truly reduce adverse events in healthcare organizations.
  • Innovation in sexual and reproductive health: This group is dedicated to the study of sexual and reproductive health, with a significant impact on research, especially in the field of the pelvic floor, where it has obtained several scholarships, publications, and doctoral theses.
  • Innovation in thromboembolic disease: This group has a long history of studying thromboembolic disease. Through monitoring and recording cases in national study groups, and conducting various research projects, in addition to clinical trials, it has achieved a significant level of research in this area. Its main objective is to prevent thromboembolic events and improve the quality of life of patients who have suffered them.
  • Innovation in heart failure: Through the recording and monitoring of heart failure cases, in collaboration with other national centers, the group seeks to define strategies to improve the quality of life of these patients. In addition, this group has a line of research in clinical ultrasound related to cardiovascular pathology. Innovation in Orthopedic Devices: Research group focused on the study of orthopedic prostheses/osteosynthesis materials, diabetic foot, and spinal pathologies.
  • Endocrine Diseases of Pregnancy: The group's main research interest is the study and management of endocrine diseases of pregnancy, with special attention to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), as it is the most prevalent disease during pregnancy and a risk factor for the subsequent development of type 2 diabetes. This recently established group carried out the first project in this area in 2019-2021, conducted entirely at the Parc Sanitari de Sant Joan de Déu. This was a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effect of breastfeeding on oral glucose tolerance.

Area/Field of expertise

Our research group focuses on innovation in medical devices and healthcare technologies. We conduct research in areas such as internal medicine, infectious diseases, patient safety, traumatology, pregnancy endocrinology, and sexual and reproductive health. We promote translational research and the clinical applicability of advanced technological solutions.

The main objective of our research is to improve healthcare through the development and evaluation of innovative medical devices and technologies, always with patient well-being as the core focus. We promote responsible and respectful research aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment, and clinical safety in various medical specialties. Our activity focuses on clinical studies on the efficacy and safety of medical devices, as well as on healthcare innovation projects applied to areas such as internal medicine, infectious diseases, patient safety, traumatology, pregnancy endocrinology, and sexual and reproductive health.
